Universal Health Coverage – 12.12.14
December 13, 2014
Friends and colleagues,
Today, 12.12.14, GHS will be standing with The Rockefeller Foundation, World Health Organization, World Bank and more than 500 organizations from more than 100 countries to launch the first-ever Universal Health Coverage Day.
The theme for 12.12.14 is “Health for All. Everywhere.” Universal Health Coverage Day commemorates the unanimous 2012 United Nations resolution urging access to quality health care for every person, everywhere, without financial hardship. The Ebola crisis is only the most recent reminder of the critical need to strengthen health systems.
The fundamental promise of health for all underpins the diverse issues we all care about – be it infectious diseases, maternal and child health, the rise of non-communicable diseases, women’s and girls’ empowerment or resilience against climate change.
The Universal Health Coverage Day coalition includes Save the Children, Oxfam, MSH, UNAIDS, Gavi, UNFPA, Women Deliver, PAHO, the UN Foundation, USAID, DFID, the Global Fund, BRAC, the International Pediatric Association, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and many, many more. It also includes leading health and development organizations, as well as many important universities and public health institutions. Universal Health Coverage Day events are being organized in more than 30 cities.
The Rockefeller Foundation has generously provided GHS and others the support and guidance to launch Universal Health Coverage Day. The foundation was an early and vocal champion of universal health coverage – a natural extension of its century-long leadership on public health and medicine.
There has never been a better time to champion universal health coverage. Last week’s report from the UN Secretary-General affirmed that health for every person, everywhere, is a pillar of sustainable development.
To learn more please visit www.UniversalHealthCoverageDay.org and help us get out the word on social media – the hashtag is #HealthForAll. And, if your organization has not done so already, it is not too late to join Universal Health Coverage Day as an official supporter.
