Lobby Day Press Coverage and Beyond by Laurie Wen

May 12, 2014

Dear Single Payer Supporter,

Thank you to the 250 participants of our 5/6 Albany Lobby Day for making it a big success! Check out the press coverage, including WCNY’s Capitol Pressroom interview with our board member Dr. Danny Lugassy and New York Health bill sponsor Assm. Gottfried (the 13-minute segment is at the end of the hour-long program). We also got covered by The Albany Times Union and The Legislative Gazette, and our rally was listed on the schedules of influential outlets such as City and State’s First Read and Capital Tonight’s State of Politics. A full press roundup will be uploaded on our website soon.

As a direct result of the 84 lobby meetings conducted by our 27 teams of advocates, we have two new cosponsors of the New York State single payer bill: assemblymembers Davila and Solages have just signed on! In addition, we helped to get eight more legislators to sign on to Assm. Gottfried’s letter to Speaker Silver, urging him to bring the bill to a vote. Congratulations and thank you to all the lobby teams!

A day after our Lobby Day, the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus announced its endorsement of the New York Health bill. The 45-member caucus puts its weight behind our campaign with a press conference Wednesday morning at the Capitol. Speakers included Caucus Chair Karim Camara, Caucus member and Senate bill sponsor Bill Perkins, Assm. Gottfried, and Anthony Feliciano, Director of the Commission on the Public’s Health System. We garnered press coverage again in The Times Union and The Legislative Gazette,

Our chapter partnered with LaborPress to organize Part II of their Union Healthcare Summit on 4/23. Titled The Future of Union Healthcare: Taft-Hartley, the ACA and New York Health, the roundtable focused on challenges faced by unions under the ACA and solutions offered by the New York State single payer bill. The event was covered by LaborPress and Crain’s Health Pulse (embedded links to Crain’s get redirected to a subscription page; simply google “ACA Reinspires Single-Payer Hopes” and you’ll be able to read the article.) The discussion was chaired by Gene Carroll, Co-Director of the NYS AFL-CIO/Cornell Union Leadership Institute, and attended by representatives of 19 unions. Mark Dudzic, National Coordinator of the Labor Campaign for Single Payer, proposed the creation of the Labor Campaign for New York Health to move the campaign forward. Two days after the event, the influential Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union endorsed the bill. Next steps are currently being planned.

Tuesday, 5/20, 7:30-9 pm The May installment of our monthly forum will be a roundtable discussion on the New York Health campaign: you’ve just read about or have been a part of all the progress we have made lately. How did we get here, and what obstacles do we face moving forward? What lessons can we learn from the 1992 campaign, the last time the bill was able to pass the Assembly? Come join the conversation with advocates who have been pushing this campaign, including Dr. Frank Proscia, President of Doctors Council SEIU; Joel Shufro, former Executive Director of the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health; and Laurie Wen, Executive Director of PNHP-NY Metro. At Beth Israel’s Phillips Ambulatory Care Center, 10 Union Square East @ 14th St, 2nd floor auditorium.
