Single Payer Activists: Let’s Celebrate Medicare’s 45th And Urge Legislators to “Go All The Way” With Expanded and Improved Medicare for All
Join in celebrating 45 Years of Medicare – and call for Medicare for All.
Groups across New York State – and the Country – are organizing events this Friday and Saturday to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Medicare – and to continue to push for a single payer, improved and expanded Medicare for All program. Events are planned for NYC, Albany, Rochester, Ithaca, Syracuse, and New Paltz. For the latest info see www.healthcare-now.org.
Groups are also telling Congress to keep their hands off of Medicare. Congress has created a Deficit Commission – similar to the base closing commission – that will report back to Congress after the November election but before the new Congress takes office, to recommend how to close the huge federal budget deficit. Of course, it won’t address the biggest problem – the massive military budget. Instead it will go after entitlement programs for seniors such as Medicare and Social Security.
So part of the message this weekend is “hands off our Medicare”. It is expected that the Commission will propose to raise the retirement age for Social Security and to cut benefits.
If you don’t see an event in your community, organize your own. Hold a news conference. Have a cake outside of a federal building and hand out slices. Leaflet.
Nationally, Rededicating themselves to the fight for single-payer health care, the League of Women Voters US (LWVUS) passed a resolution with a wide majority at their national convention “to advocate strongly for bills that legislate for improved Medicare for all.”
